The future of Vienna city planning: Wishes of an outside insider

An evening with Christoph Chorherr

An event by Wolf Theiss and the Urban Land Institute

Christoph Chorherr was one of the most influential green politicians in Vienna and had a lasting impact on city planning with his ideas: at the beginning of the millennium he advocated the expansion of cycle paths, car-free urban housing developments, intelligent heating technology in private and municipal buildings, and the dedication category subsidized housing as a milestone against land speculation and for environmentally friendly urban development architecture. The projects he helped initiate are urban milestones – such as, to name just one example, the first car-free furniture store in Austria without a single parking space, and in the middle of the city.

The fact that Christoph Chorherr no longer has a political role does not mean that he no longer has a political vision – quite the opposite. From the perspective of the (now) outside insider, what should happen in a city whose major challenges, in addition to climate change and a necessary energy transition, are also a rapidly growing population and ever-increasing property and housing prices?

In addition to his ideas on these topics, Christoph Chorherr will also present his passion project, the two school projects of the Ithuba Community College Johannesburg and the Ithuba Wild Coast Community College, to which he has been tirelessly committed for many years, in which young South Africans have the concrete opportunity to development into a different future and talk about the work and importance of the association s2arch – social and sustainable architecture. Ein Abend mit Christoph Chorherr

Christoph Chorherr war einer der einflussreichsten grünen Politiker Wiens und hat die Stadtplanung mit seinen Ideen nachhaltig geprägt: Er setzte sich schon zu Beginn des Millenium für den Ausbau von Radewegen, für autofreie städtische Wohnsiedlungen, für intelligente Heiztechnik in privaten und kommunalen Bauten, für die Widmungskategorie geförderter Wohnbau als Meilenstein gegen Grundstücksspekulation und für eine umweltfreundliche Städtebauarchitektur ein. Die durch ihn mitinitiierten Projekte sind urbane Meilensteine – wie, um nur ein Beispiel, zu nennen, das erste autofreie Möbelhaus ohne einen einzigen Parkplatz Österreichs, noch dazu mitten in der Stadt.

Der Umstand, dass Christoph Chorherr nun keine politische Funktion mehr hat, bedeutet nicht, dass er keine politische Vision mehr hat – wohl ganz im Gegenteil. Was sollte aus der Perspektive des (nun) außenstehenden Insiders in einer Stadt geschehen, deren große Herausforderungen neben dem Klimawandel und einer notwendigen Energiewende auch eine rasant wachsende Bevölkerung und stets steigende Grundstücks- und Wohungspreise sind?

Christoph Chorherr wird neben seinen Ideen zu diesen Themen auch sein Herzensprojekt vorstellen, die zwei Schulprojekte des Ithuba Comnmunity College Johannesburg und das Ithuba Wild Coast Community College, für die er sich seit vielen Jahren unermüdlich engagiert, in denen jungen Südafrikanerinnen und Südafrikanern die konkrete Möglichkeit zur Entfaltung in eine andere Zukunft gegeben wird, und über Arbeit und Bedeutung des Vereins s2arch – social and sustainable architecture sprechen. Der Verein sucht regelmäßig nachhaltige Sponsoren.
